The application itself may seem relatively simple, but in practice, problems often arise because the wrong type of residence permit is selected or the documents submitted do not properly support the reason for staying in Turkey.
There is no single residence permit option that is suitable for everyone. The right application depends on why you want to stay in Turkey and your personal circumstances.
Which Residence Permit Can You Apply For?
There are several types of residence permits in Turkey, including short-term, family, student and long-term residence permits.
For most foreigners, the first question is usually whether they qualify for a short-term residence permit in Turkey. Short-term residence permits can be based on different grounds, including property ownership, certain business or commercial connections, education, Turkish language courses, medical treatment and other purposes recognised under Turkish law.
Family and student residence permits have their own requirements.
It is important to choose the correct category from the beginning. Having a rental agreement, owning property or enrolling in a course does not automatically mean that a residence permit will be approved. The authorities will consider the application and supporting documents as a whole.
What Documents Do You Need?
The documents required for a Turkish residence permit application depend on the type of permit you are applying for.
In general, you may be asked to provide your passport, biometric photographs, proof of your address in Turkey, health insurance, financial information and documents showing the reason for your stay.
Documents issued outside Turkey may also need to be apostilled or legalised and translated into Turkish.
One of the most common problems we see is inconsistency between documents. Even where the applicant has prepared all of the basic paperwork, conflicting information about an address, dates or the purpose of stay can create difficulties.
How Does the Application Process Work?
Residence permit applications are generally started through Turkey’s official e-Residence system.
After completing the online application, you will need to follow the relevant procedure for submitting your documents and, where required, attending an appointment with the immigration authorities.
The important point is not simply to submit as many documents as possible. Your application should clearly show why you are staying in Turkey and that you meet the requirements of the residence permit you are applying for.
Can a Residence Permit Be Rejected?
Yes. Residence permit applications can be rejected.
Incomplete documents, problems with the registered address, choosing the wrong residence permit category or failing to properly demonstrate the purpose of stay can all cause problems during the application.
Previous immigration issues can also make an application more complicated. If you have overstayed your visa, previously received a residence permit refusal or have another immigration issue in Turkey, it is usually better to have your situation reviewed before submitting a new application.
If you have already received a refusal decision, you should also avoid waiting too long before seeking legal advice, as legal deadlines may apply.
Can You Work in Turkey with a Residence Permit?
A residence permit does not automatically give you the right to work in Turkey.
If you are planning to work, establish a business or carry out professional activities while living in Turkey, your work permit position should also be considered separately.
