Following the establishment of the Kahramanmaraş İstiklal Sports Club in 2016, and particularly after the change in the board of directors last year, the Kahramanmaraş Governor’s Office, the Kahramanmaraş Mayor’s Office, along with business leaders and, most importantly, the support of the people of Kahramanmaraş, the club earned the right to advance to the top league by securing championships in both basketball and soccer.
In this context, given that our city was, so to speak, buried under the rubble on February 6, 2023, the championships won by the Kahramanmaraş İstiklal Sports Club in both soccer and basketball are virtually priceless in terms of the city’s cultural development, solidarity, and collective memory.
The Social Unifying Power of Sports
In the wake of the extremely tragic event our community recently experienced, our successes in soccer and basketball—which are now bringing the community together with joy and enthusiasm—are also of great significance in terms of our collective memory.
Likewise, society is a unique entity that exhibits continuity as a whole, through the history shared by its members and its aspirations for the future. The joy and enthusiasm we experience at the local level through sports activities serve to foster solidarity at the national level, promoting integration, unity, and rapprochement among various races, ethnic groups, and social classes. In this way, sports leads the way in social change. Thus, sports also serves as an instrument of peace. (Keten, Mustafa, Sports in Turkey, Ankara, 1974)
The purpose of this article is to provide readers with information on the implications of current developments in this field by examining in detail the social and economic impacts of sports and their relationship to sports law. In particular, the focus will be on the social and economic impacts of sports.
The Social Impact of the Kahramanmaraş İstiklal Sports Club
Sports, which serve as a unifying force among different social groups, have fostered a sense of unity among the people of our city, a sentiment that has become increasingly evident through the consecutive successes achieved by the Kahramanmaraş İstiklal Sports Club.
Similarly, the joy and excitement that began with basketball have become evident among our fellow citizens, who took to the streets following the soccer championship victory. In fact, for days now, sports and our success in sports have dominated public discourse.

The strengthening of social bonds, the growing spirit of social unity and solidarity stemming from joyful events in the community, and the coming together of the people of Kahramanmaraş to celebrate their victories in sports have clearly demonstrated the existence of a societal need for sports and sporting activities.
The Economic Contributions of Sports
In addition to all of this, sports play an important role not only because of their ability to bring the community together, but also because of the economic benefits they will bring to our city. Sports events will make a significant contribution to the local economy.
For example, Katherine A. M. Williams (2018);
“Major sporting events can revitalize local economies through tourism, infrastructure development, and job creation.”
At the same time, it emphasizes that such events can enhance the economic profiles of cities and regions.
This is because these events generate significant spending potential in sectors such as lodging, food and beverage, and transportation for participants and visitors.
From an economic perspective, the sports industry has become a major market. It generates economic revenue in many areas, including sporting events, stadiums, media rights, sponsorship deals, and merchandise sales.
This is where the importance of sports law comes into play; the laws and regulations governing the economic aspects of sports play a critical role in ensuring fairness, safeguarding competition, and protecting the rights of clubs and athletes in this sector.
The Importance of Sports Law
Sports are no longer merely an activity that contributes to physical and social well-being. Due to the widespread interest it has generated in recent years and its unique economic dynamics, it has now become a commercial sector. When football and other sports are considered together, they generate significant economic power.
Due to the unique nature of sports activities and/or their economic implications, Sports Law is now establishing its own set of rules and emerging as a distinct discipline. Sports Law can be defined as a branch of law that regulates the relationships among sports entities and ensures that sports are conducted within a specific framework of rules.
The fact that sports play an active role not only in our country but also on the international stage has contributed to the emergence of sports law as an independent discipline.
With the incorporation of sports clubs, it has become inevitable to manage their operations in the same way as businesses. The need to define the rights of clubs and athletes, handle transfers and player management, and manage transactions related to sports activities—such as broadcasting, advertising, sponsorship, and ticketing—particularly the necessity of contracts in these areas, makes expertise in these matters essential.
The Social Role of Sports Law
Sports law provides a framework that supports the social and economic importance of sports. Issues such as the regulation of sporting events, the protection of athletes’ rights, and the oversight of sports organizations constitute the core areas of sports law.
This area of law safeguards not only the rights of athletes and clubs but also those of fans and the general public. Consequently, sports law not only strengthens the social function of sports but is also essential for ensuring economic sustainability. These two dimensions of sports are built on a more solid foundation through the safeguards and regulations provided by the law.

In conclusion, sports provide people with the opportunity to have fun and make the most of their free time. Physical and mental activities are essential for maintaining good health. At the same time, they strengthen and foster friendships between individuals and communities.
With the promotion of our Kahramanmaraş İstiklal Sports Club to the next division, all of us in Kahramanmaraş have experienced great joy, and our city’s spirit of friendship has become even more evident through the activities organized. Despite all the hardships we’ve faced, this has brought us happiness.
The right to sports is an absolute right. It can be asserted against anyone, and everyone is obligated to respect the right to sports. The existence of sports law also provides this guarantee.
We hope that sports, which make a positive contribution to the socio-economy of individuals, cities, and countries on both micro and macro scales, will be of great benefit to all the people of Kahramanmaraş. I am confident that by working diligently and adhering to the rules in all sports disciplines, we will achieve great success. Let us come together through sports, uniting the diverse cultures and social groups in our city around a common goal. By encouraging our children and youth to engage more in sports, let us help them build a brighter future.
